Before diving into a full week of creative service at I AM ART Camp, our team began the journey in the historic city of Antigua, Guatemala—a place bursting with color, culture, and meaning. These moments weren’t just sightseeing—they were an intentional part of the I AM ART experience, helping us step into Guatemala’s story with humility and wonder.

Beauty and Bravery at Alta Mira
At Alta Mira, we soaked in sweeping views of volcanoes and vibrant landscape art. We wandered through whimsical sculptures and lush gardens, and for the adventurous few, soared above the treetops on the famous air bike. These shared thrills brought laughter and connection as we embraced new experiences together.

History and Faith at La Merced
We explored the iconic La Merced Church, one of Antigua’s most beloved landmarks. Its radiant yellow façade, intricate colonial architecture, and rooftop views reminded us of Guatemala’s deep faith, resilience, and living traditions. Standing in that sacred space gave us time to reflect on the spiritual legacy woven through this land.

Art and Redemption at Casa Santo Domingo
A few team members visited Casa Santo Domingo, where ancient ruins and contemporary art coexist in one breathtaking space. The peaceful courtyards and museum exhibits whispered a profound truth: beauty can rise from brokenness—a message that mirrors the heartbeat of I AM ART.
Taste, Texture, and Local Connection
No cultural immersion is complete without food—and Antigua did not disappoint.
We:
- Shopped in local markets, engaging directly with Guatemalan artisans
- Tasted traditional flavors at restaurants like El Bosque and Tres Tiempos
- Even experienced McDonald’s like never before—in a colonial courtyard with volcano views

Every encounter became a reminder that culture isn’t just observed—it’s shared.
More Than Tourism—A Heart Posture
These early days weren’t just preparation for the week—they were formation.
Through each cultural encounter, we:
- Deepened our connection as a team
- Broadened our understanding of Guatemala’s beauty and complexity
- Cultivated a heart posture of respect, humility, and empathy

In stepping outside our comfort zones, we didn’t just learn about Guatemala—we grew to love it more deeply.
Why Cultural Experience Matters
These moments are not extras.
They are essential to forming hearts that listen first, love well, and lead with compassion.
Because to serve well, we must first understand.
To create beauty, we must first receive it.

Antigua gave us both.
And for that, we are grateful.
