Under the sheltering branches of a Guatemalan tree at Opal House, five passionate educators stepped into something rare—a creative, faith-filled retreat designed just for them. The I AM ART Teacher Workshop, led by Amy Martinez and Dave Baggett, unfolded over three intentional days of Bible study, personal storytelling, and hands-on artmaking. Set in the heart of Lake Atitlán’s natural beauty, this sacred space allowed teachers to rest, reflect, and reconnect with their purpose through Scripture and creativity.

Rooted in Faith, Expressed in Art

Each morning began with a Bible study in Ephesians, guided by Dave. These quiet reflections offered more than biblical insight—they provided a spiritual grounding for the creative journey that followed.

Then, under Amy’s guidance, the teachers began a watercolor bookmaking project. Their task?
To imagine and write a simple children’s story, and bring it to life through hand-painted illustrations.

The setting was tranquil. The purpose was powerful:

To remind educators that their creativity matters—and their voices are worth sharing.

A Twist in the Story: Conflict as Catalyst

On Conflict Day, a creative curveball was introduced.

Each teacher was asked to incorporate a challenge or disruption into their story—mirroring how real life rarely follows a perfect plotline.

This simple prompt sparked deep conversation:

Some stories took dramatic turns. Others introduced unexpected moments of redemption.
The pages reflected not only imagination, but lived experience.

Pages Bound, Hearts Renewed

By the final day, each teacher had painted, written, and bound their pages into a finished children’s book.

When they read their stories aloud, there was:

But this workshop offered more than five beautiful books.
It offered renewal.

These educators left not only with handmade stories—but with refreshed spirits, ready to pour into their students again with creativity, confidence, and care.

I AM ART.
I am a storyteller.
I am still learning, still growing, still becoming.
And I am not alone.
