How a Visit With a Local Artist Showed Students That Art Can Carry Hope

One of the most powerful lessons of the week did not happen in a classroom.

It happened in the studio of a local artist named Kenny.

During a community visit, students met a local artist whose story embodied perseverance, creativity, and hope.

During a community visit, students met Kenny and heard how a devastating accident changed the course of his life. The crash nearly took his life and left him with a severe spinal injury. He now lives in a wheelchair and continues to navigate the physical realities of that loss every day.

When Art Became More Than Therapy

But Kenny’s story did not end in tragedy. During the long recovery process, he was introduced to art as part of his rehabilitation. What began as therapy slowly became something deeper—a new language for healing, purpose, and perseverance.

Over time, Kenny developed a passion for mosaic art, building intricate pieces and cultivating his own artistic style. Today, he runs his own studio and continues to create.

What began as recovery eventually became a creative practice shaped by resilience and purpose.

A Testimony Students Could See

Kenny also shared how, in that same season of pain and rebuilding, he encountered Christ in a deeper way. His faith changed the way he understood both his suffering and his creativity.

That combination made his testimony unforgettable. Students did not just hear that art can be meaningful; they experienced it. They met someone whose life had been reshaped by it.

Kenny’s story offered a living picture of something I AM ART proclaims all week long: creativity can become a pathway for healing, identity, faith, and restoration.

After Kenny shared his testimony, each group got to paint a collaborative piece with Kenny. Since “Starry Night” was used in many of our projects, we decided to do our our Starry Night painting! He also let us play his new marimba!

Hearing Kenny’s testimony helped students see the message of restoration embodied in real life. Kenny surprised us and attended the end of the week Art Show!

At Athentikos, we care deeply about these moments—moments when students see that beauty can emerge from pain, that purpose can survive loss, and that creativity can become part of how God restores a life.
